What's mediation?
It is a type of interaction that takes place when: 1) the speakers do not speak the same language, 2) the speakers speak the same language, but one of them has better or more specific knowledge of the common language or a certain topic. According to this differentiation, mediation tasks can be intralinguistic (from English into English) or o interlinguistic (from Spanish into English). Mediation activities can be oral or written. When you mediate, you may translate, interpretate, paraphrase, summarise and take notes.
Some GENERAL tips
- Do not include what is not relevant for your interlocutor.
- Rephrase. Do not copy sentences from the text: use synonyms, write the same ideas with different words.
- Avoid repetition.
- Express the same information in fewer words.
- Highlight key information before starting to write your email.
Some SPECIFIC tips
- Choose relevant information, not irrelevant ideas.
- Think carefully about the main idea. Read well. Understand the information to process it.
- Be faithful to the text. Do not invent data.
- Be clear, go to the point and use necessary details.
- Do not repeat ALL from the source text. Make a new text (paraphrase, use synonyms, etc.)
- Do not give your personal opinion. You are just transmitting information.
- Offer a new meaningful text based on the information you have chosen.
- Pay attention to the context.
- Pay attention to your recipient. Adapt your language. Use good language.
- Make comprehension and communication easy. Your recipient needs to understand you.
