DESIGNING STEPS TOWARDS VET SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION

In this presentation you find innovative approaches, methods and tools to support you in implementing Step 2: Planning the Greening Process!

Step 1: Under-standing the process

Step 2: Planning the greening process

Step 3: Imple-menting the plans

Step 4: Monitoring and assessing the results

Recap: What have we done in Step 1?

What we have so far:

  • Clear understanding what is meant by “Greening Process”
  • Alignment with official mandates and policies
  • Overview of your support within the organisation
  • First priorities regarding the greening area
Now it is time to start our Planning Phase!

DEVELOPING A VISION

Once all the information necessary to determine the direction to be taken has been assembled, a vision can be created. What we have so far:

  • Clear understanding what is meant by “Greening Process”
  • Alignment with official mandates and policies
  • Overview of your support within the organisation
  • First priorities regarding the greening area
  • A rationale why we are doing this

DEVELOPING A VISION

Once all the information necessary to determine the direction to be taken has been assembled, a vision can be created. What we have so far:

  • Clear understanding what is meant by “Greening Process”
  • Alignment with official mandates and policies
  • Overview of your support within the organisation
  • First priorities regarding the greening area
  • A rationale why we are doing this

Why planning matters

Plan for a Greener VET: After Step 1 in which we created an understanding how to make VET more sustainable, the next step is to create a plan with goals for the short and long term. This plan focuses on making the whole institution better for students and communities. Why Planning Matters: It's important to plan carefully when reshaping an institution. If the planning is not done well, and there is a lack of communication, it can make the staff and students unhappy. This can make it harder to try again later.

Tasks in Step 2

We divided Step 2 into five sub-tasks to help you plan your greening process. We present all 5 tasks on the following slides and provide you with accompanying tools and templates to help you manage the tasks.

Planning the change

Getting People on Board

1. Raising Awareness And Formulating The Rationale 2. Developing A Vision 3. Promoting Broader Engagement 4. Assessing Current Realities 5. Developing An Institutional Greening Plan Of Action

Task 1: RAISING AWARENESS AND FORMULATING RATIONALE

    • Formulating a rationale might be the most important step.
    • A sense of urgency must be created in the organization in order to find fellow campaigners.
    • Everyone involved must be convinced of the importance of the task.
    • Everyone should see the process as important and helpful for students, the community, staff, and the institution.

    Dimensions of a Rationale

    Formulating the Rationale

    Economic and labour market dimension

    Environmental dimension

    Social dimension

    Cultural dimension

When formulating a rationale it might be helpful to analyse the following dimensions

    FORMULATING THE RATIONALE

Use the Handout: Formulating the Rationale Write down aspects in the 4 dimensions why a greening process for your institution is needed

    Task 2: DEVELOPING A VISION

Once all the information necessary to determine the direction to be taken has been assembled, a vision can be created.

    • A vision helps to give direction to the individual greening plan as it progresses.
    • Each further planned measure can be checked to see whether it supports the vision or not.
    • The vision can be used for further communication within the organisation.

    Task2: DEVELOPING A VISION

Use the Handout: Developing a Vision Statement This Handout guides you through the process of developing a Vision.

    Task 3: PROMOTING BROADER ENGAGEMENT

    • You will need to get people on board from management to students to implement a greening process.
    • Organise meetings with management, colleagues, student boards etc. to advertise the topic.
    • Use the rationale and the developed vision to get broader commitment in your organisation. If you created a good argument in your rationale why your organisation should engage in sustainability measures, it should not be hard to convince people!

    Task 4: ASSESSING CURRENT SITUATION

Before creating a greening plan, it’s crucial for an organization to assess its current situation and ambition level. This helps identify strengths, gaps, and readiness for change, allowing for a tailored, realistic plan. This strategic assessment lays the foundation for a successful and sustainable transformation

    Task 4: ASSESSING CURRENT SITUATION

    • The everGREEN team developed an Assessment Tool
    • The tool supports you to assess your level of readiness and your level of ambition
    • Based on your readiness and ambition you will find yourselve in one of 9 scenarios
    • The tool will provide you with tailored mini-courses fitting this scenario!

    Task 4: ASSESSING CURRENT SITUATION

You can find the everGREEN Assessment Tool on our Online Support Tool:

    Go to Assessment Tool

Task 5: DEVELOPING AN INSTITUTIONAL GREENING PLAN OF ACTION

    • Now it is time to start developing your Individual Greening Plan!
    • Remember: Not all that needs to be done can be undertaken at once!
    • The first step is to consider which goals should be set.
    • During the next steps in the Greening Process the plan will be developed step by step - implementation steps, resources, assessment and monitoring, etc.

    WHAT DOES A PLAN CONTAIN?

    • Goals: Overarching goals
    • Sub-goals: Smaller, subordinate goals
    • Target: What you want to achieve
    • Baseline: The current situation regarding the goal?
    • Benchmark: A good point of reference against which the progress can be compared or measured.
    • Opportunities/Threats: Enabling or hindering factors
    • End-Goal: Measurable goal
    • Timeframe: Indication of time horizon
You find some examples on the next slides
