A dramatic reading

Intro

What is it?

Brainstorm to understand

What is it : brainstorm

A dramatic reading

B- Preparation

What to do BEFORE a dramatic reading?

Do this activity. You can take notes during, after, but they will also be on pronote.

Accents

Accents are key to each play, as they are apart of each characters identity and storyline. Therefore, must be respected during a dramatic reading.
My advice:
  • Do not do the accent if you do it badly. (avoid caricature)
  • Respect the writing, some accents have specific writing (as seen in play).
  • You must try: Do not overdo it, respect the characters identity by doing a subtle accent : which can consiste in simply respecting the writing.

Gestures

Gestures are dramatic ! Your gestures should be big enough for all your audience to see and represent what your character is feeling. You CAN be over the top.

Volume

Start out low energy, when the plot reaches its climx: this is when you should be speaking louder. You finish the reading by having a softer voice as the plot comes to a fall.

CoNFIDENCE

comes with practise

Confidence

Reading

Looking in a mirror: You realise if you are stuck to your book and you can see the impact of your mouvements. Do it in front of a few people of confidence (some people prefer to start small and work themselves up, some it's the opposite).

OUT LOUD: - practise your accent. - your mouth gets more familiar with the mouvements for different sounds. - your brain registers what it should (not) sound like Recording yourself : identifying which elements need to be improved AS MUSH AS POSSIBLE

SING

Narration and stage directions

Auditive reactions

The gestures

Without them, you have no drama.

ex:laughing

Pay attention to these notes as they set the tone to the drama you have to put into place when doing a dramatic reading. Is she laughing? Crying? Timid? Angrily walking?

Feelings /emotions

The context

The implicit

Physical reactions

ELOQUENCE

The speed of your voice will depend on your characters emotions (similar to the volume). The punctuation is extremely important. This is what sets the rhythm of the reading. Intonation of certain words and just as important.

Emotions and gestures

Hand in hand

Activities 5 - 6 - 7

Emotions and gestures go hand in hand. Each emotion has a physical reaction. You can use gestures to represent show an emotion.

- Link the emotion to a gesture (HW) - Represent the emotion I give to you by only using gestures. -React to a scenario.

Be careful, this is not drama

REACT TO A SCENARIO

The others wll not be able to see it. They will have to guess it.

Aïssata tells you she got 19/20 for the French Bac.

Your mum tells you the new puppy has been hit by a car.

Your best friend FALSY accuses you of cheating on the English test.

Examples

Take notes on what makes it a dramatic reading.
