Eziekiel Gillespe sued the state of wiscosnin for his right to vote -- and won.

While a state refferendum in 1849 technically gave African American's the right to vote in Wisconsin, Gillespe's suit in 1866 allowed them to excercise this right.

Marcia p. Coggs became the first Black Female legislator to serve in the state of Wisconsin.

- She served in the Assembly for 16 years
- She was first elected 2 years after her husband died to serve in his Assembly seat
- Her daughter Elizabeth served one term in the state assembly, and many other family members have served around the state

vel r phillips became the first black secrtary of state, the first black person to win a statewide election and the only black woman to ever do so.

- She is also famous for her advocacy for affordable housing in Milwaukee
- North 4th Street from St. Paul Avenue to Capitol Drive in Milwaukee was renamed Vel R. Phillips Avenue in her honor.
