What was the world like?

  • The first birds emerged during the Jurassic period! They are known as pterosaurs!
  • Plants like palm trees and tree ferns were present during this period!

What major event took place?

Due to the breaking up of Pangea, sea levels rose and gave way to a hot and humid climate. Lush greenery formed in previously dry, lifeless area.

The Toafrican Oceanic Anoixc Event was a mass extinction event that caused severe disruption of mainly Earth's marine populations. While the exact cause is unknown, paleontologists have hypothesized that the event could have been the rising 13-C levels which rapidly heated Earth's oceans.

  • Prey animals included stegosaurs, and the brontosaurus!
  • Brontosaurus means "thunder lizard", and it's characterized by its huge tail that acted like a whip!

The organism we've become familiar with at the start of this course, the Ichthyosaurs, showed their faces during this period. Along with much bigger dinosaurs like the Brachiosaurus and the Apatosaurus!

While the oceans saw massive amounts of biodiversity such as new marine animals, reptiles, and coral reefs! The atmosphere also contained high amounts of carbon dioxide, which also warmed up the planet.
