The Lord of the Flies by Sir William Golding
Chapter 3 "Huts on the Beach"
Chapter 2 Summary

When the explorers come back, Ralph blows the conch shell to call the boys for a meeting on the beach. He tells them there are no adults around, and they need to organize themselves. Jack mentions finding a pig in the jungle, and Ralph agrees they need hunters for food. Ralph says they'll use the conch shell at meetings – whoever holds it can speak, and the others listen. Jack agrees. Piggy gets worried because no one knows they crashed on the island, and they might be stuck there for a long time. This idea scares many of the boys. A little boy with a mark on his face says he saw a monster the night before. The group gets scared, but the older boys try to calm everyone down, saying it was just a nightmare. Ralph suggests building a big fire on the mountain to signal passing ships. The boys get excited and head to the mountain. Ralph and Piggy, though, are not as thrilled. Piggy keeps complaining about the group's childishness and stupidity.

The boys gather a bunch of dead wood and use Piggy's glasses to focus sunlight and start a fire. They get a big fire, but it goes out quickly. Piggy gets upset and says they need to be more skilled if they want to leave the island, but no one pays much attention. Jack offers his group of hunters to keep the signal fire going. While trying to restart the fire, the boys accidentally set a bunch of trees on fire. Piggy gets mad and tells them that the little boy who saw the snake-like beast is missing after playing near the fire. The boys feel sad and surprised, and Ralph feels ashamed. They pretend like nothing happened.
