Pencil

The invention of the modern-day pencil is accredited to Nicolas-Jacques Conté in 1975. It wasn't until the 1990s that pencils were mass-produced. This was when pencils became prevalent in classrooms.

Chalkboard

James Pilans invented the chalkboard in 1801. The chalkboard transformed the culture of education by giving teachers the ability to reach all students at once.

Ballpoint Pen

The ballpoint pen was invented by John Loud in 1888. However, it wasn't until half a decade later that the ballpoint pen was refined and mass produced.

The Overhead Projector

The overhead projector was invented in the 1930s and was originally used by the military for World War II briefings. However, by the 1950s, overhead projectors found their way into classrooms allowing teachers to share images with the entire class.

Photocopier Machine

The copy machine revolutionized the rate at which teachers could produce copies of instructional materials. Chester Carlson worked with the Harold Photographic Company from 1838 - 1947 to create the first copy machines.

The Handheld Calculator

Texas Instruments created the first handheld calculators. Students could now perform computations at rapid rates improving math instruction.

World Wide Web (Internet)

Invented In the late 1980s by British scientist Berners-Lee, the World Wide Web was created to enable information sharing between scientists and academics. It wasn’t long before the internet made its way into classrooms.

SMARTboards

SMARTboards were invented in the 1990s for the sole purpose of creating a new interactive to present material, specifically for classroom education. Today, SMARTboards are prevalent in classrooms throughout the world.
