History of Tourism
People traveled to learn. It was all the rage and they would travel all over Europe to see art, architecture, science and more in countries other than their own. Generally the most visited places were France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. People traveled in carriages and were accompanied by someone older who would take care of them.
Travel was non-existent. It became dangerous after the fall of the Roman Empire. Transportation was fragmented; also the language and the currency. This made traveling to a different place much more difficult.

With the mass production of Henry Ford's Model T, people had more freedom to travel. And thanks to the testing of Orville and Wilbur Wright's airplane in North Carolina, commercial air travel was introduced.
Thomas Cook organized a tour of about 570 people to travel including food and entertainment. There was instant demand and the full-time business of organizing and providing travel services was born.
The Modern Era
Hotels and motels adopted the franchise model for business expansion, and air travel became popular and the credit card was also introduced.
History of Tourism
People no longer necessarily travel just to travel: they want an immersive experience, adventure and the opportunity to contribute to the local community. Throughout the 21st century, Internet access has become more common and new frontiers have opened.
Organizations working in the sector can now offer much smarter tourism experiences, such as virtual tourism. Many tour operators and travel agents have gone bankrupt, including the famous Thomas Cook.
