"Our real enemy is not the neighboring nation; it's hunger, cold, poverty, ignorance, routine, superstition, and prejudice."

-Henry Dunant

The geneva convention

  • On February 7, 1863, a committee of five people, including Dunant were appointed by the Geneva Society for Public Welfare to put Dunant's "plan" into action.
  • This committee formed what is now known as the Red Cross.
  • Dunant traveled all over Europe to obtain representatives as promised by each nation's government.
  • At this convention, there were 39 representatives from 16 different nations in attendance.
  • August 22, 1864- 12 of these nations signed an international treaty, known as the Geneva Convention.
  • This treaty agreed to guarantee neutrality to sanitary personnel, to expedite supplies for their use, and to adopt a special identifying emblem- a red cross in a field of white.

what happened next...

  • He spent most of the rest of his life in poverty
  • Settled in Heiden, Switzerland
  • Still promoted things such as just treatment of prisoners of war and the abolition of slavery
  • Rediscovered by a journalist in 1895 and was awarded many honors and annuities after
  • He was awarded the first ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901

henry Dunant at the end...

Although Dunant was "rediscovered" and brought to light once again in 1895, he spent the rest of his days living in hospice in Heiden, Switzerland until he passed away on October 30, 1910. There were no funeral services held for Henry Dunant. He spent none of the prize money that he had received. Instead, he gave some away to the people who cared for him in hospice, donated a "free bed" that was to be used for the sick among the poor people in the village. The rest was left for philanthropic enterprises in Norway and Switzerland.
