French woman of letters, Simone de Beavoir is recongnized throughout the world thanks to her feminist essay entiled "The Second Sex". Her romantic relationship, which was particulary marginal for the time, with the philosopher and writer Jen-Paul Startre, gave her a special status as an independent and totally liberated woman.

She were marked very early on by a strong political commitment. She also demonstrates a very pronounced commitement to the condition of women. In 1949, she published an essay entiled The Second Sex. Inconsiderations always close to existentialism, she advocates the liberation and emancipation of women in society.Throught a historical, scientific, sociological and literary study, she attemps to demonstrate the exent to which women are alienated by men. The only way to escape it would then be to acquire total in dependence. This work scandalized high society, but was supported by Claude Lévi-Strauss and became the basis of the first feminist movments. A successful author, she won the prestigious Prix Goncourt for Les Mandarins. Committed, she made her life and her writings an exemple of FEMALE EMANCIPATION.

She led the Third Indo-Pakistani War, developed an India nuclear weapons progrm, and incressed India's influence over Southe Asia. His government presided over the Green Revolution and the nationalization of banks and major industries. From 1975 to 1977, Indira Gandhi established a controversial stats of emergency which allowed her to suspend public freedoms.
