The Overlander

An under the radar serie that deserves more light.

Start

"Gregor the Overlander is first and foremost the story of a family."

So, What is it About?

The story of kind and quiet Gregor and his two years old sister, "Boots", as they fall, not down a rabbit hole, but the grate of their laundry room, to land not in the Wonderland, but the Underland. They discover the existence of a secret, long-forgotten world right beneath New York City, inhabitated by creatures that will either help you... or kill you.

...THEMES relevantTo this day...

''It had all looked pretty familiar. The bodies, the fear, the desperation. These things had always been here in the Overland, he supposed, but he had never really paid any attention to them until now."

- Chapter 27, The Code of Claw

Parallel to Vietnam War

Parallel to the Holocaust

"Every day when I wake I tell myself that it will be my last. If you are not trying to hold on to time, you are not so afraid of losing it. "

- Queen Luxa

The Underland Chronicles is full of compelling characters that question racial and gender stereotypes.

Conclusion

'Unlike Gregor, who cannot wait to leave, readers will likely find the Underland to be a fantastically engaging place.'

Read Gregor because...

  • It has a structured plot that will keep you hooked.
  • It has heavy themes.
  • It is relevant and can be compared to the real world.
  • It has amazing characters that challenge gender and racial norms.
  • It is accessible to all age groups, be they adults or children.

My thoughts

  • My favourite book out of the five was the Curse of the Warmbloods.
  • This series greatly helped curing some of my phobias (and enhanced others...)
  • My favourite character was Howard.
  • Each book had me in tears at least once.

Thanks for listening!
