1.Saint Patrick was born in Great Britain. At the age of 16, he was captured by Irish pirates. 2.He was taken to Ireland as a slave (un esclave). 3.He lived there as a shepherd (un berger) for six years. 4.However, he managed to escape on a ship back to his family. 5.He became a Catholic missionary (prêtre catholique), and he returned to Ireland where he converted the Irish people to Catholicism. 6. He performed many miracles, and legend says that he banished snakes from Ireland, with the snake symbolising evil. 7.The symbol of Ireland is the shamrock because Saint Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Trinity in the Christian religion.
