Archean Eon

Atmosphere

Fun Facts:

  • O2
  • O3
  • Surface barometric pressure
  • N2
  • HCN
  • N20
  • CO2
  • The earliest well-preserved sedimentary and volcanic rocks are Archaen
  • 2-3 percent of the Earth was dry land
  • Solar Luminosity was 25-30 percent lower than modern day
  • Few archean sedimentary rocks are found in the present

The Archean Eon lasted from 4 to 2.5 billion years ago. During the observation period, the surface temperatures exhibited a fluctuation within the range of 18 to 24 degrees Celsius. This variability in temperature shows dynamic environmental conditions, likely influenced by factors such as solar radiation, atmospheric circulation patterns, and local geographical features. The sea temperature exhibited a broad spectrum, ranging from 40 to 80 degrees Celsius, indicating diverse thermal conditions within aquatic environments. Such temperature variations can profoundly influence marine ecosystems, affecting the distribution and behavior of marine organisms, as well as physical processes such as ocean circulation and heat transfer. Simultaneously, the atmospheric composition posed intriguing challenges and opportunities for life forms. With the absence of usable free oxygen, the atmosphere likely presented a vastly different environment compared to modern Earth. Instead, nitrogen and carbon dioxide were predominant gases, shaping the chemical landscape and potentially influencing the evolution of early life forms. In this primordial atmosphere, the emergence of life began with prokaryotes, simple single-celled organisms lacking membrane-bound organelles
