E' una scrittrice tedesca che compone le sue opere in lingua italiana ed alcuni dei sui libri sono stati tradotti in varie lingue. E' nata il 17 novembre 1937 ed è morta all'età di 86 anni.

Nel quartiere ci si prepara a festeggiare il Natale, i bambini giocano a palle di neve e tra le famiglie che vivono lì, i rapporti di vicinato sono molto buoni. Il clima è cordiale: i ragazzi giocano liberamente e corrono insieme, le mamme si scambiano torte e piaceri, i fidanzati si vogliono bene così come anche la bellisima gatta Muschi ed il gatto nero Koks. Nelle prime settimane del 1933 succede qualcosa : Hitler sale al potere, fa molta strada ed instaura il regime nazista e promuove le leggi contro gli Ebrei.

David e Fritz stanno trascorrendo la loro infanzia insieme ed anche i loro gatti Koks e Muschi si adorano proprio come loro.

Tutto si trasforma in modo inarrestabile e tragico. In quell'anno la vita delle 3 famiglie è totalmente cambiata dall'odio e dall'indifferenza. Il razzismo si manifesta in maniera prima silenziosa e poi sempre più evidente e colpisce tutti i protagonisti. David e Fritz vivono una ricca e delicata storia di amicizia fino a quando David non può più frequentare la palestra per fare il corso di attrezzistica. Da qui anche il suo buon amico Fritz inizia a diventare cattivo e per gli Ebrei sarà sempre peggio fino ad essere costretti ad emigrare.

Il libro narra di come il Nazismo sia stato un fenomeno capace di rovinare ogni rapporto: tra vicini di casa, amici e familiari. In questo romanzo perfino l'amore tra 2 gatti in Germania ai tempi di Hitler era praticamente impossibile perchè i 2 rispettivi padroni erano 1 ebreo e l'altro nazista. La trama del libro è un astoria di odio, violenze e persecuzioni da parte dei nazisti contro gli Ebrei, ma secondo me emerge anche la tragedia di chi decise di non fare nulla e di non opporsi alle ingiustizie per paura o egoismo.
