Types of Butter Churns of Ireland

There were essentially three types of butter churns: the dash churn, the barrel churn, and the paddle churn.

2,325-year-old bog butter weighing almost 13.5kgs recovered from Rosberry in County Kildare, dated 360 to 200 BC, alongside the keg it was found in.

Most Bog Butter is found by turf-cutters and farmers working the land much like the two men in the video. ‘A few years ago there was a man cutting turf in the above mentioned bog and he found a little hamper of butter. But it must have been there for a long time because no one in the village remembers the time when the people used to put the butter in the bog to keep it sweet and fresh.’(“Butter Found in Cloonaugh Bog · Teach Chaoin (C.) · The Schools’ Collection” volume 0096, page 81)

In this video, she uses a more modern type of churn which helps with the longevity of churning energy. She doesn't scrap off the cream to use for this butter since she got the cream from the store(or market) which is already separeated.
