LOCATION AND SOME HISTORICAL PROBLEMS
Seychelles, an island nation, with its capital and largest city named Victoria, is located in the Somali Sea segment of the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar and about 1,600 km east of Kenya off the east coast of Africa. The Seychelles were uninhabited before being encountered by Europeans in the 16th century. It faced French and British interests until it came under full British control in the late 18th century. Since it proclaimed independence from the UK in 1976, it has developed from a largely agricultural society to a diversified market-based economy, characterised by services, the public sector and tourism activities. From 1976 to 2015, nominal GDP grew by almost 700%, and purchasing power parity almost 1600%. Since the end of 2010, the government has taken measures to encourage foreign investment.
How many tourists per year?
The Seychelles recorded a total of 183,000.00 tourists in 2021, ranking 99th in the world in absolute terms. However, it is important to note that the number of tourists can vary from year to year due to several factors, including global events, economic and political conditions, as well as the performance of the international tourism industry.
PHYSICAL ATTRACTION
The Seychelles sing a breathtaking natural beauty, with white sand, crystal clear waters and rich flora and fauna. One of the physical attractions of the Seychelles are the igh hanging gardens that overlook silver-white beaches and clear lagoons but we also have the famous beaches of Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent and the rich culture that is reflected in the cuisine and music of the archipelago. The coral islands, which rise only a few meters above sea level, are flat with high coral reefs in different stages of formation. These islands are largely without water and very few have a resident population.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGESOF TOURISM
Environmental conservation
Prohibition of harmful materials
Rules for the tourists:
Tourists are required to respect local laws and behave in a manner that respects the environment and culture of the Seychelles.Seychelles has strict rules to protect the fragile environment and preserve the archipelago’s rich biodiversity. Some of the main rules for tourists include:
Respect for local culture
Some of these initiatives include: 1. Eco-friendly accommodation: Many accommodation facilities in the Seychelles are committed to reducing their environmental impact by adopting sustainable practices such as recycling, energy saving and the use of biodegradable products. 2. Responsible tour operators: There are tour operators specialising in ecological and sustainable excursions, which offer guided tourist experiences that respect the environment and contribute to nature conservation. 3. Conservation programmes: The Seychelles hosts several wildlife and flora conservation programmes, which actively involve tourists in research, monitoring and protecting local ecosystems.
Ecotourism:
In the Seychelles, many initiatives have been put in place to protect the archipelago’s fragile environment and numerous measures have been taken to promote sustainable tourism and environmental conservation. There are numerous eco-friendly accommodation facilities and tour operators that offer responsible tourist experiences, such as guided nature tours, respectful scuba diving and wildlife conservation programs.
