The Triassic Period
Fun Facts
252 to 201 million years ago First peiod of the Mesozoic Era
Triassic World:
The Triassic Period occurs right after the Permian-Triassic Mass Extinction (PTME) event, which is known as the "Great Dying" because it is the biggest extinciton event in Earth's history. Due to this event, entire ecosystems were destroyed, meaning that the diversification of life in the Triassic Period started off slow. In the early Triassic there was an absence of forests and reefs in shallow waters, which also contributed to the slow diversification. Following the PTME, where temperatures increased globally by about 15° C, the Triassic Period had a warm climate without ice caps. Many inverebrate, bivalves, and gastropods marine species, along with insects and some tetrapods on land survived the PTME. Over time, in the ocean, predatory animals, like neoselachian sharks and marine reptiles emerged, and on land tetrapods, archosaurs, and some of the first frogs/turtles appeared.
End-TriASSIC mass Extinction:
The end of the Triassic Period is marked by the End-Triassic Mass Extinction, which is one of the five largest mass extinctions in Earth's history. The are multiple components that are believed to have contributed to the mass extinction, but a lot of them revolve around the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) volcanoism. The CAMP event involved massive volcanic eruptions in the Atlantic region, The CAMP event is believed to have led to marine anoxia (oxygen deficient waters), ocean acidification, global warming, and the release of toxic elements like flourine and chlorine into the atmosphere. The release of these toxic elements would cause acid rain and can deplet the ozone-layer. The End-Triassic Mass Extinction event affected the marine ecosystems the most causing many species to go extinct.
