HIS LIFE

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in colonial India which had been under British control for centuries.

STUDIES

He became a lawyer in London, and became a leading member in the movements to obtain his country's independence from the English Empire.

Gandhi developed satyagraha, "passive resistance", a tactic of non-violent disobedience adopted by millions of Indians to oppose British rule without using weapons. For this reason he earned the honorific title of Mahatma, “great soul.”

In 1947, India gained its independence But at the same time as India was born, a part of it broke away from the rest of the country, becoming Pakistan, with a Muslim majority. Gandhi tried to pacify all parties, but on January 30, 1948 was assassinated by a fanatic. The world recognized the importance of Gandhi, who will always be remembered on the International Day of Non-violence on 2 October, his birthday.
