Facts

Interesting information:

1.) The Cambrian Period saw the first predator ever, known as Anomalocaris. This creature was a 2 foot long shrimp-like organism that had disk shaped mouth used to kill and eat shelled organisms. 2.) The Cambrian Period is the first period of the Paleozoic era, Paleozoic meaning "time of ancient life." 3.) The organisms of this Period would bury themselves in the sand, which altered the sea floor and the algae that rested on top. 4.) Trilobites were the first organisms ever known to have eyes.

Events

What major events happened?

The major event that occurred during the Cambrian period was the Cambrian explosion, which led to larger more protected animals due to predation. The Cambrian explosion likely occurred due to an increase in oxygen, which would increase the ecological threshold and allow for predators to evolve. The Cambrian explosion would cause a burst of life and diversity not yet seen in the world, effects that can still be seen in modern life today.

World

What was the world like?

The Cambrian period featured a warmer climate than todays, with a more even climate throughout. This means that the temperature at the poles was not much cooler than the temperature at the equator. The Cambrian period also saw some of the highest levels of CO2 at 4,000 ppm. Most of the organisms that existed during this period were aquatic, as much of the Earth was covered in extensive shallow water. Much of the organsisms that existed during this time were armored or mineralized, this includes Trilobites, Brachiopoda, and Wiwaxia.
