Understanding of basic principles of bilingualism and bilingual education Mejia, A.(2006)
"Baker, C. (2001). Fundamentos de la Educación Bilingüe y el Bilingüismo"
- To refer to bilingualism and bilingual education, there are certain terms and distinctions that often stand out, besides the linguistic capacity that the individual possesses, there are other linguistic achievements, competencies, performance and linguistic skills, this document intends to show how different authors and researchers have to adopt their own concepts and distinctions that make them specific, for example, there are bilinguals who only possess productive competence and others are more passive and have the receptive capacity, there are certain dimensions in which bilinguals are analyzed and also according to their interaction.
- English has become widespread thanks to globalization, but in Colombia, the term bilingual is a concept that is almost always used to refer exclusively to English/Spanish, overlooking the cultural diversity of the Colombian territory, such as the indigenous languages or the teaching of other modern languages. These communities and languages are disadvantaged because English has a greater impact on society than these, passing to another level without much importance, and as a consequence, very few people know these languages. The notion of a "national bilingual program" brings to the forefront the concept of national language policy, especially with regard to languages and taking into account the recognition of Colombia as a multi-ethnic and pluricultural nation in the Colombian Policy.
Conclusion
- It can be said that there are several factors that characterise a bilingual, in addition to the linguistic capacity that the individual possesses, there are other linguistic achievements, competences, performance and linguistic skills that the speaker must take into account and develop, on the other hand the Colombian territory most people emphasise the concept of bilingual who can speak English/Spanish, but do not emphasise that it is a diverse territory, Multilingual and multicultural, where people who speak a language other than English, such as the indigenous language, are not recognised as bilingual. Any person who has the ability to express themselves in a second language other than their mother tongue is considered bilingual, which allows people to relate to other cultures, enabling the exchange of knowledge, culture and the transition to new eras thanks to the exchange of knowledge and innovation.
