2007
In 2022, I underwent a successful brain surgery. I would still need to air on the side of caution, but this was a huge relief. I could live my life more normally--with less pain and worry. I felt extremely fortunate.
Social Justice Standard Diversity 8: Students will respectfully express curiosity about the history and lived experiences of others and will exchange ideas and beliefs in an open-minded way.
In 2007, I started school. This would mark a shift of focus for me; I would now place a heavy focus on my academics, and later in life, I would even take it so far as to base some of my worth on my academic performance later in life.
In third grade, we learned about different cultures and backgrounds, including about the Native Americans and Hawaiians. I was very intrigued. I remember a Hawaiian parent coming in to teach us Hawaiian dances and answer questions about the culture. When learning about the natives, I learned and asked about indigenous customs, "How did the Chumash make their homes?"

2008
In 2017, I discovered that I had a brain tumor after having a seizure at school. This would cause a lot of physical pain and result in me making a lot of health changes in my life.
In 2008, I briefly traveled to Mexico and met some of my relatives. This trip made me realize how much more advanced things are in the US, which taught me not to take things for granted.
2002
2002 marks the year I was born. I was born in Merced, CA.

In 2013, Pope Francis was the first American to be elected pope. As a Catholic myself, this has had many effects. Pope Francis has made some controversial statements and decisions that have been considered controversial even among the Catholic community. I feel that this has, in some ways, made Catholics more hated and, in other ways, has further divided Catholics.
2020
In 2008, the Great Recession, or house market crash, hit. As a result, my family and I had to sell our home and move.
The 2020 election year was very politically polarizing. Trump ran for reelection, and this was the first time I was of the age to vote. The presidential candidates and results both sparked controversy. The election also resulted in a major political shift. Altogether, this made me really research and consider my stance on various political issues.
2020
2012
In 2020, COVID-19 caused the world to shut down. We all went into lockdown for months on end. Businesses and schools closed, and people were dying. For me, the pandemic meant I would be unable to get the "senior experience" as a high schooler. I had to start college online as well. As a result, I was unable to complete in-person classroom observations during this time.
In 2012, the Sandy Hook school shooting took place. Around this time, our school began practing more urgent and frequent lockdown drills. This precise event is what came to mind when threats of a school shooting were made at my high school. Such a troubling event shows how dangerous our world can be and is part of the reason why people associate the US with school shootings.
