Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology I

Summary: The basics of Human A&P I.

Learners

The students in this class are in the advanced course of Human Anatomy and Physiology I. They are twelfth graders in high school.

Standards

1.1c Feedback to Improve Practice: Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. HAP.1.1 Apply appropriate anatomical terminology when explaining the orientation of regions, directions, and body planes or sections.

Detailed Description of the Lesson

We already discussed the definition of anatomy and physiology. Can anyone tell me the definition of anatomy? Can anyone tell me the definition of physiology?

Introduction: Today we are going to be learning about the anatomical positions of the body. This is the position of the body when it is standing upright and facing forward, with palms facing forward.

*Students will be taking notes during the lesson with their notebooks and pencils.*

Continued...

To start out, we will be learning superior and inferior. Superior is relative to the head, or the top of the body. Inferior is relative to the feet, or the bottom of the body. So, if we were to look at our knees relative to the abdomen, our knees would be inferior because they are below. If we were to look at our abdomen compared to the chest, the chest is superior to the abdomen because it is above.

Continued...

This slide is anterior and posterior. Remember we must be in our anatomical position for every plane or region. The front of our body is referred to as anterior. The back of our body is referred to as posterior.

Continued...

This slide is appendicular and axial regions of our body. The axial region of the body is also known as the trunk. This houses the head, neck, chest, and stomach. The appendicular are referred to as appendages. Appendages are the arms and legs, or anything attached to the trunk.

Continued...

Next is proximal and distal. This is closely related to superior and inferior and can get confusing. Proximal and distal is only related to our appendages vs superior and inferior related to our axial region. Proximal is close to. Distal (think of as distance.) So, our fingers are distal to the elbow. The elbow is proximal to the fingers.

Continued...

Last is medial and lateral. Medial refers to the midline of the body. Lateral refers to away from the midline. Ask about the toes, and which are closer to the midline vs lateral. Big toe is medial, and the pinky toe is lateral.

Now the lesson is over. The students will be asked to grab a chrome book and open up Quizziz. I have made a review quiz on the lesson. The students will have to use a code to log on. This will be a fun way to review everything we just learned.

Assessment Plan

I will give a test to measure student learning. It will be on lateral vs. medial, proximal vs. distal, axial vs. appedicular, anterior vs. posterior, and inferior vs. superior. The test will consist of a matching section and a multiple-choice section. The students will match the terms to the body. There will be 11 questions.
