Question
- Present information and open- ended questions (Avoid Yes/No questions)
- Use simple grammar structures for the questions that will be presented. For instance, instead of saying "If you were Mary, what would you have added to the passage?" Use "Based on Mary's answer, what do you want to add?"
- Post questions in a visible place so students can access it easily.
- Extract and use vocabulary from the passage in the questions presented.
Signal
- Body language is meaningful to students and diminishes the language barrier. Be creative:
- Thumbs up
- Hands on your chin
- Put your pencils down
- Put your paper face down
Stem
- Allow the ESOL students to have choral repetitions of the sentence starters proposed,
- Provide word banks and pictures with the vocabulary you expect them to use.
- Have choice boards available for students to choose the topic they want to focus on.
- Add reference points.
Share
- Have students respond on sticky notes.
- Post notes on walls anonymously, if possible to lower the affective filter.
- Use note exchanges with a peer so that students have a supporting resource to share.
- Digital platforms to record answers and listen to others. Examples listed.
