Pays développés : Ce sont des pays où la population a un revenu assez élevé pour satisfaire aux besoins essentiels, avoir accès à l'éducation et avoir un certain niveau de confort. IDH est égal ou supérieur à 0.8. Pays en développement: Pays qui se situe entre les deux extrêmes. Ils ont un IDH entre 0.5 et 0.8. Ils sont souvent en voie de devenir développés. Pays les moins avancés: Ce sont les pays les plus pauvres et les moins développés. Il y a environ 49 pays dans cette situation et ils ont besoin d'aide internationale.
