Characteristics of Effective Teams
A Collective Learning Task
Research Problem
Expected Outcomes
As a team you will present a comprehensive response to the research questions:
You have already completed a poll to record your initial opinions regarding what characteristics are most important in determining team success. The objective of this task is for you to work as a team to conduct a literature review (a type of research) to identify what expert researchers have found regarding team success and something called collective intelligence.
- What are the characteristics of effective teams?
- How do effective teams operate/function?
+ INFO
NB: You will have a short break before presenting your findings.
Where to begin?
What do studies say about effective teams?
How can we present this in a coherent way?
Understand the term collective intelligence.

Take note
The same question, with a different angle.
The second question asks you to describe characteristics as actions statements.
- This may help you with later planning for your own team projects. Hopefully you will identify gaps and be able to write action statements to help you arrive at goals.
Keep in mind
There is a task within a task here. It's very meta. Your team has to perform effectively as a team in order to complete it. You might consider the following strategies:
- Identify separate tasks within the main task
- Assign tasks and roles to individuals
- Designate someone to check in with everyone to make sure you're on track to achieve your goals.
It doesn't need to be elaborate, but everyone needs to speak.
You don't need a fancy presentation document, just coherence and cohesion in the information you present to answer the research question.
- You should also be able to identify sources of key information.
Where do I find academic research?
Our university's online library is a great resource!
- Start with the directory for Sciences humaines et sociales.
- You can also try Google Scholar.
- There is an interesting podcast called Hidden Brain.
What prompts should I use?
Look it up!
Go further than wikipedia!
Wikipedia is often a good place to start, but be sure to look for sources with academic references.
- Wikipedia entries list sources you can consult.
- How do you know if a source is reputable or not?
- Degree of transparency: authors listed, sources listed, and the information is retrievable in other places.
- Tips from the University of Texas El Paso:
