Where Did Sin Come From?

start >

Long, long ago, before God made man, He made the angels. Thousands and thousands of angels were created to serve God and praise Him. All of them were beautiful, clever, super smart, and strong. They could travel through air as fast as lightening.

The most spectacular of all angels was named Lucifer. He was a superangel, full of wisdom and clothed in precious jewels. Of all the angels, Lucifer had the most honored and important job—he guarded the throne room of God.

Now, just like you and me, every one of these angels had volition—that means they had a free will and could make choices. God let them decide for themselves whether to obey Him or turn away from Him forever.

At first, Lucifer chose to obey God and was near Him day after day. But after a while, this superangel became jealous of God’s greatness and power. Lucifer became so proud of his own beauty and intelligence that he decided he wanted to be like God.

The Bible tells us that Lucifer thought he could rise above God’s throne and rule heaven and earth (Isa. 14:13–14). In his mind, he made a decision to turn away from God and try to be just like Him.

Right at that moment, as he thought these things, Lucifer sinned. He was disobeying God because he no longer wanted to serve Him. Sin had come into God’s beautiful heavenly home.

Have you guessed yet who Lucifer really is? We now call him Satan, since that word in Hebrew means “enemy.” Yes, Lucifer, or Satan, is the original enemy of God. Even though he is still a bright shining angel—spectacular on the outside—he is the chief angel of evil who tries to make things that are wrong look right.

He’s so evil that after he brought sin into God’s home, he also convinced a whole lot of other angels to follow him. God promised all of those bad angels that someday they would be thrown into the lake of fire.

Satan decided that until then, he’d try his best to trick God’s other creatures into turning against God. His first big move was to enter the Garden of Eden in disguise as a friendly animal. This way, he could tempt the first man and woman to disobey God, to sin, just like Satan had sinned.

So when you hear the question, “Where did sin come from?” you know now that sin came from the devil himself: “For the devil has sinned from the beginning” (1 John 3:8).
