HARDWARE-INPUT

INPUT DEVICE

[WHAT IS AN INPUT DEVICE]

An input device is a piece of equipment used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system.

WIRELESS BARCODE SCANNER

A barcode reader is widely used at the point of sale to reduce the time of transactions. A barcode scanner is also used in the storing of info about the products manufacturing time and price

• It is done with speed and accuracy which requires less manpower.
• Very accurate when it collects data from the barcodes which minimizes any errors
• Saves time and reduces manual data input
• helps in managing and organizing products effectively.
• It is fairly easy to use and barely requires any to much labour.

DISADVANTAGEOF BARCODE SCANNER

• quite costly especially for people with small businesses.
• barcode labels are vulnerable to being damaged, if damaged it will cause issues when one is attempting to scan the barcode.
• it's range is quite small and can be problematic and troublesome
• they can only scan limited data and information
• they can be vulnerable to cyber attacks from harmful barcodes

CARD/CHIP READER

A merchant terminal that reads and writes a credit and debit card that contains a microcontroller chip

KEYPAD

This number pad (commonly abbreviated to number pad) is usually positioned on the right side of the keyboard as most people are right handed to key in the number of same items bought, to key in a weight of a product (eg weighing scale), to key in the number of the barcode if the scanner cannot read it.

To make a payment, the card is inserted into the reader and removed when the transaction is completed.

ADVANTAGES OF KEYPAD/KEYBOARD

• They are inexpensive which is good and affordable for businesses with low budget.
• They are easy to handle for most people
• They can be connected to any computer via bluetooth/ USB cable / wireless / etc
• Reliable for small businesses
• Enables to create word processing or data entry documents.

DISADVANTAGE OF KEYPAD /KEYBOARD

• If not properly used, it will get damaged easily.
• It is a more time consuming option compared to barcode scanner/reader
• Uses up a lot of desk/work space
• Higher risk of human error
• You need a certain level of keyboard skil to efficiently use it (eg type faster)

An output device is any piece of computer hardware that converts information/data into a human-perceptible form or historically into a physical machine reader form for use of other non computerized equiptment (eg : texts, words, images)

Thermal Printer

To print out a receipt or itemised list. Its mini and portable so, we can save space on the checkout section and it doesn't use printer ink so we can save money on that, instead it runs on lithium batteries so it can be recharged easily. Apart from that, as it doesn't use printer ink, it's also environmentally friendly.This encourages supermarkets to be more environmentally friendly.

• Fast printing and accurate, does not waste time

ADVANTAGES OF THERMAL PRINTER

• Damagaes to the printer are difficult to repair
• The receipts are of poor quality
• Usually have little colour options
• Paper used for receipts usually don't last long

DISADVANTAGES OF THERMAL PRINTER

Speaker

To make a beeiping sound everytime a barcode is read correctly: but also make a sound if it is read incorrectly.

Microphone

to relay info quickly between employees or to make announcements when there is an emergency or a sale going on.

• It boosts morale, meaning that the customers will feel appreciated after they purchase from a supermarket so they will comeback and buy again. (eg the speaker outputs " thank you for purchasing at store XXXXXX we appreciate youu and hope you come again")
• helps indicate an item has been scanned
• it can easily connect to a computer system
• it can broadcast an announcement when needed.
• it can play music for people while they shop to make the experience more enjoyable.

DISADVANTAGES OF SPEAKER

• Loud sounds can irritate some people
• Not all speakers are able to produce high quality sounds, only expensive ones are able to.
• speakers can easily get hijacked and could play unwanted sounds.

• More faster to read in text than to type it using a keyboard.
• Can be used in voice activation systems
• Can be used to make announcements through the speaker.

DISADVANTAGES OF MICROPHONE

• Voice recognition software isn't as accurate as typing it in.

• The quality of the microphone may affect how it sounds.

some touchscreen do not actually need wifi to work.

It is used to select items by touching an icon (such as fresh fruits which may be sold without packaging) Touchscreen is both an input and an output.

• Easy and fast to use which is very user friendly.
• Not much extra products needed such as a mouse or keyboard
• Faster response
• resistant to heat
• cheap and inexpensive

• The screen will easily get dirty from users fingerprints.
• less durability compared to other technologies.
• it's polyester surface can be easily damaged
• It has low endurance in the long run
