COMMON GRAMMAR MISTAKES

Commonly Confused Words

It’s = it is. (Ex: It’s so dang cold outside)Its = associated with something recently mentioned. (Ex: The weather has a mind of its own)

There refers to a location. Ex:“See that restaurant over there?”Their refers to a designation. Ex:“Yep, that’s their favorite one!”

Its vs. It’s

There vs. their

Peek means to look at something. Ex:“Can I take a peek of the scenery?”Peak refers to the top of something. Ex:“Sure, but I heard the view’s better from the peak”

May indicates a possibility. (Ex: I may quit my job, even though I’m good at it.)Might indicates a hypothetical probability. (Ex: Then again, I might get fired.)

Lay describes the action of placing something flat. (Ex: lay down, Fido!)Lie describes the status of something resting flat. (Ex: Fido likes lying down.)

Loose refers to something that’s been let out of control. (Ex: Don’t be afraid to let loose.)Lose is the opposite of win. (Ex: After all, what do you have to lose?)

Effective ways to avoid them:

Constant practice.

Use a dictionary.

Study the list of commonly confused words.

Use a grammar checker to find and fix errors.

Follow your intuition.

Keep a list of words you commonly confuse.
