What are they?

Adobe Express and Canva are both a design, photo and video online editor. These apps allow users to create content either using templates, or blank canvases that they can design from scratch. Canva and Adobe Express are the two top applications of their kind and have very similar characteristics. Even though they have a wide range of services, I will focus on video editing.

Canva Video Editing

Canva offers different types of video creation like: Instagram reel, Tik Tok video, Youtube video, video collage, slide show video, Pinterest video. For each category, Canva has a plathota of templates, which makes the process easy for beginner designers. Canva has a free version and three types of paid version: canva pro for $119.99 a year, Canva for teams for $119.90 a year and Canva for Enterprise for a customized price.

Adobe Express Video Editing

Adobe Express interface is very similar to Canva's. It offers different types of video creation like Instagram video, Tik Tok, regular video, etc. Unlike Canva, Adobe offers the Twitter video option. Also, Adobe has hundreds of templates where to choose. It also offers a free version and a paid version for $9.99 a month.

Canva is compatible with many more application of all kinds like Pageproof, Panda docs, Xibo, etc.

Adobe Express is not compatible with as many apps as Canva

Canva has a wider rang of export formats. Seven in total including PPT and SVG.

Adobe offers four types of export formats only.

The background removal feature is accessible with the free plan.

The background removal is available only with the paid plan.

Adobe Express offers 1093 video templates.

Canva offers more than 16.000 video templates.

The audio manipulation in Canva is more powerful and has many more features.

The audio features in Adobe do not allow effects like fade it and fade out.

Adobe has a wide range of professional fonts. Up to 20.000.

Canva has a total of 2.000 fonts.

Canva has a good pricing, but you are required to pay the whole year at once.

Adobe Express has a good pricing and you can pay monthly.

Conclusion

Both applications took graphic design to a different level and are excellent tools to create appealing designs. However, considering all the features, pro's and con's of both applications, I can say that Canva is a superior platform for video editing. It has a higher storage capacity, it has significally more templates, allows you to share to more platforms and in more formats, the audio edition is more powerful and all for the same price as Adobe Express. I think Canva is the best choice to edit video over Adobe Express.

Main menu

You can add all kinds of elements, text, logos, drawings and audio to your video. You just click on the category, select your favorite choice and drag to the video. You can upload files or record yourself by clicking on "upload" option.The "apps" option allows you to download applications to use in the edition of the video. You must make sure that the app is compatible with Canva. Finally, you can organize and name your projects using the "projects" option.

The canvas

This is the place where you drag and drop your video. You can visualize the video as it will look in the MP4 file. If you add any element or decoration, this is the place where you set it up in place. Make sure the video size is the same as the canvas.

Menu bar

You will find quick video edition tools like removing background, crop length of video, playback, flip, animation and position. You can also control the background noise and transparency of the video image.

Video timeline

You will visualize 5-second frames of the video along with the elements you add, and the audio tracks. In this part you can trim the clip, add more than one clip, add decorative frames, add transitions between pages and so on. You can also manipulate the size of the canvas here.

The share button

Here you choose the users you want to share the video with and how you want to share it (with a link, as a Facebook page, etc). When you click on download, you can choose the file type, and the weight of the file. There are other two options: share on social media and print with Canva, which works best with graphics.

Main menu

The main menu has very similar features to Canva's, but organized differently or with different names. This menu in Adobe Express includes a "your stuff" button where your projects are saved. There is also a media option where you can find audio, pre recorded videos, and images to add to the timeline of the video. The elements and text button offer the same elements on both apps. Finally, the add-ons button allow you to add applications to enhance the video editing. This button is called "apps" in Canva.

The canvas

You can drop your video on the canvas and control different features like the volume, the speed, the opacity of the image, and apply entrace and exit effects to the different videos on the timeline, and adjust the video color, light and shadow configuration,

Video timeline

The video timeline is very similar to Canva's as well. It shows the video in short frames along with the timeline of the elements you add, and the audio tracks. In this part you can trim the clip, add more than one clip, add decorative frames, add transitions between pages and so on. You can also manipulate the size of the canvas here.

Download and share button

One button in Canva does both jobs: sharing and downloading. However, Adobe separated both in two different buttons. You can download your final product in MP4 and at different resolutions. On the other hand, you can share your project with people you choose or in different platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

Menu bar

It allows you to resize the dimensions of the canva, choose a background color, font colors, translate text, set the size of the canvas, and visualize each layer of the project.
