THE WAR OF THE SPANISH SUCCESSION (1701-1713).
- The War of the Spanish Succession broke out when the Spanish king Charles II died without an heir.
- Charles II did not want his empire to be broken up after he died.
- He believed that only France would be able to keep all the Spanish territories together so he named Philip, Duke of Anjou (France), the grandson of Louis XIV of France, as his heir.
- Nevertheless, Archduke Charles (Austria) had also the right to be the throne successor.
- When Charles died in November 1700 Louis announced that his grandson was the new king of Spain as Philip V. He then invaded the Spanish Netherlands.
- However, Some European territories didn´t want Philip V as a king because the power wouldn´t be balanced.

- For this reason, the Holy Roman Empire (Austria, Germany, Bohemia- today Czech Republic, Switzerland, Netherlands and parts of Italy), England, Saboya and Portugal made up the Grand Alliance supporting Archduke Charles.
- France and Spain supported Philip V.
- The War of the Spanish Succession began in 1701 and it ended in 1713 with the Treaties of Utrecht.
- Philip V would keep Spain and the Spanish colonies, but he would give up his claim to become king of France. Nevertheless he also lost Gibraltar and Minorca(ceded to Britain), Naples, Milan, Sicily, Sardinia and Spanish Netherlands (ceded to Austria)

Treaties of Utrecht.
- Because of the conflicts of interest between the former allies, the representatives of the different countries met to reach an agreement.
- The first group of treaties was signed in Utrecht (Netherlands) in April 1713.
- Philip V remained king of Spain, but the treaties of Utrecht marked the rise of the power of Britain and the British colonial empire at the expense of both France and Spain.

THE BORBOUN KINGS.
- FELIPE V ruled with absolute power in the first half of the 18th century (1700-1746).
- He centralised the government and he also eliminated local laws and institutions.
- He declared Spanish the only official language and introduce a new law called "Ley Sálica", which prohibited women from becoming queen.
- He divided Spain into provinces.
- CARLOS III, ruled Spain in the second half of the 18th century (1759-1788).
- He made many changes to improve the country and the lives of the Spanish people.
- He chose efficient ministers that helped him to improve Spain´s cities, roads, education, agriculture, industry and trade. He built publich hospitals in the cities and introduced street lighting, rubbish collection services, streets paved with cobblestones and sewage network.

- The quest of logic and reason in the 17th century gave rise to further new social and political ideas in the 18th century often called "The Enlightenment".
- The scientific researches of the 17th century had begun a widespread process of examination and exploration of the world and, as a result, in the 18th century great encyclopedias were published.
- The Enlightenment also represented a search for happiness, justice and knowledge, in music, romance, travel, philosophy and politics.
- It was a time of intellectual growth and innovation, with philosophers such as Voltaire and Kant; the composer Mozart or political thinkers such as Rousseau.

RENAISSANCE (XV-XVI) VS BAROQUE (XVII-XVII)
- Italy (17th century) Spain (18th)
- Inspired by Ancient greek and Roman art.

- Baroque painting featured exaggerated lighting, intense emotions and even a kind of artistic sensationalism.
- Baroque is a highly theatrical architectural style that emphasizes spectacle through lighting, color, and design

- Classical beauty.
- Art and architecture relied on mathematically precise compositions and designs which explored ideal harmony.

TREATY OF FONTAINEBLEAU
Due to Godoy´s ambition (who was Charles IV´s favourite) this treaty was signed. The agreement was carried out in Fontainebleau (France) in 1807.
The War ended in 1814.
Mutiny of Aranjuez
In 1808, due to Godoy´s error, king Charles IV was forced to abdicate in favor of his son Ferdinand VII. Nevertheless, Fernando VII was dethroned by José Bonaparte (Napoleon´s brother). Finally, Fernando ascended to the throne in 1814.
This treaty permited Napoleon troops to invade Portugal passing through the Peninsula.Their idea was to invade Spain later.
1808. French army entered Spain to conquer Portugal but they broke the treaty and began to attack Spain.

The colonists from the Spain´s colonies in America were tired of :
CONSTITUTION OF CADIZ
The Spanish government settled in Cadiz created the Constitution of Cádiz (1812). This constitution pleaded for a new organization of the state based on liberal principles.
Their little or non-existent autonomy, the high taxes, the absolute power of the monarchy and their mistreatment, the lack of freedom andtheir poor living conditions.
In 1814, Fernando VII abolished the Constitution of Cádiz and restored Spain to an absolute monarchy with the king as the head. In 1830 he abolished "Ley Sálica".
Between 1814 and 1825, guided by the ideas of the French Revolution, the american colonies were gaining the independence.

INSTABILITY IN THE LATE 19th century
For this reason, the First Carlist War begins in 1833 and lasted 6 years. Liberals supported Isabel II and carslsts supported Carlos.
Isabel II ascended to the throne as the successor of Fernando VII in 1833. Charles of Bourbon, who was Fernando´s brother, had also the right to the throne.
In 1839 Maroto and Espartero, in charge of the liberal faction, signed a peace agreement, the Convention of Vergara.Don Carlos had no choice but run away to France, which ended the First Carlist war .
Infant Charles was not in favour of "Ley Sálica" abolition so "carlists" wanted to regain the absolute power.
In 1868 Isabel II was forced to abdicate

In the middle of the Republic (1874), Alfonso XII (Isabel´s son) was crowned king of Spain. His period is known by the restoration of the absolute monarchy and the bourbon dynasty.

In 1898 Spain lost the last three colonies in America: Cuba, Puerto Rico and Filipinas. This marked the decline of the Spanish Empire
1869 Fourth constitution of Spain is created. 1871-1873 Amadeo of Savoy ruled Spain. The early years of King Amadeo's reign was fraught with growing republicanism, Carlist rebellions in the north, and the Cuban independence movement. He declared Spanish people ungovernable.
1873- 1875 First Republic of Spain. The president was the head of the country.There were 4 different presidents along a single year.
THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
- The Industrial Revolution beganin Great Britain during the 18th century and It was spread to other European countries in the 19th centuries.
