A form of phobia that is characteried by overwhelming self-consciousness during common social situations

Origins of this term

  • The term "social anxiety" was coined by Pierre Janet in 1903 to describe people who feared being observed, while speaking, playing the piano, or writing.
  • Social anxiety nowadays is a term used to descibe the excessive fear, nervousness, and apprehension that people experience in social interactions as described by Gillian Butler back in 1999.

Effects from social anxiety

An individual may feel different symptoms from social anxiety including:

  • intense fear of meeting strangers
  • worry about embarassing themselves
  • overanalyzing their actions and words
