What is down syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome (CDC, 2024). It is catergorized as an Intellectual Disability under IDEA (US Department of Education, 2018
Each year, about 6,000 babies born in the United States have Down syndrome. This means that Down syndrome occurs in about 1 in every 700 babies (CDC, 2018)
Common Characteristics - Physical
- Flattened profile and nose
- Poor Muscle Tone
- small head, ears, and mouth
- upward slanting eyes
- wide, short hands
- Protruding Tongue
- Shorter in Height
- Skin fold that comes out from the upper eyelid and covers the inner corner of the eye
