What is context?

•The detail that gives texts their meaning.

So then what is the "surrounding context?"

Surrounding Context Part 1

Text that surrounds any language unit that helps in finding it's meaning.

Ex: "Stephanie was bemused by her math homework." Using surrounding context, what does "bemused" mean?
Ex: "Michael becomes quite choleric when things don't go his way." Using surrounding context, what does "choleric" mean?

Surrounding Context Part 2

Joe was feeling ___ after receiving a low grade.
The sports car was too ___ for Sarah to afford.
A. Sumptuous B. Chintzy C. Bargainous D. Cheap
A. Benign B. Auspicious C. Dejected D. Roseate

3. After each word I will read the correct definition so we can all learn it together.
1. Each table has a paragraph from 'The Giver' taped to it with a word underlined. With your group rotate to each table and, by yourself, use the surrounding context to define the word. 2. When my timer is up read your definitions to your group (Conver-Stations) and decide together which definition is best to present. (Numbered Heads Together)
