BACKGROUND

FRIEDRICH AND LEOPARDI

TECHNIQUE

The technique is oil on canvas. Thanks to the effect of the fog, rocky peaks, sky and horizon seem to blend together. The entire landscape is dominated by light colors. We don't see the man's face because it's as if we were observing the landscape with his own eyes.Friedrich creates an effect of depth thanks to perspective. There is also a contrast between cold colors (the main part of the landscape) and dark colors (the mountains and the traveller).

THE MEANING OF THE PAINTING

The painting could represent man as a small creature compared to the magnificence of nature. Nature is seen as something sublime, which for him is an emotion between dismay and pleasure in the face of an unstoppable, often hostile nature, such as storms or eruptions, something so beautiful that it is perceived as frightening. This painting has been represented as an emblem of self-reflection or contemplation of the path of life. Friedrich expressed his opinion in this regard: "The artist should paint not only what he has in front of him, but also what he sees inside himself."
