La storia (dal greco antico historía, "ricerca", "conoscenza") è la disciplina che si occupa dello studio del passato tramite l'uso di fonti, cioè di documenti, testimonianze e racconti che possano trasmettere il sapere del passato. Il termine "storia", in italiano così come in altre lingue, ha anche il significato di "racconto letterario" o comunque di narrazione, orale o scritta, di vicende immaginarie. Questo termine non sarà discusso perchè la storia, di per sé, è una "narrazione".
