EWHEN ONE EVENT HAPPPENDE WHILE ANOTHER EVENT WAS IN PROGRESS, USE THE SIMPLE PAST FOR SECOND ACTION OR EVEN.EXAMPLE I WAS WATCHING THE GAME WHEN MY SISTER CALLED.

DO NOT USE THE PAST PROGRESSIVE WITH NON ACTIONS VERBS. EXAMPLE WE SAW gEMMA YESTERDAY WE WERE SEEING GEMMA YESTERDAY IS WRON
