What will our lesson look like?
Learning Intention
The intention of this lesson is to deepen my understanding of poetry by exploring the theme of escapism in "Spaceships" and appreciating the poet's use of language to convey emotions and ideas.
Success Criteria
- Identify and analyze the literary devices in the poem.
Language Objective
I will use specific literary terms to analyze and describe the poem.
- If you could escape reality and travel in a spaceship to anywhere in the universe, where would you go and why?
- Write some thoughts in the chat!
Do Now:
In “Spaceships,” acclaimed poet and University of Mississippi professor Derrick Harriell recalls a youthful episode of admiration and wonder. Using imagery and metaphor, Harriell describes the arrival of relatives in their Space Age Chevrolets who seem to hail from another world. Throughout this poem, the speaker plays with traditional stereotypes of what it means to be “alien,” suggesting that even members of one’s own family can seem like they’re from a galaxy far, far away.*Play StudySync Video

saucer

sniper

Quiet and patient, Derrick Harriell and his cousins wait behind the bushes for their uncles to arrive. The four recount the last time that they saw their uncles. To these kids, their uncles are awe-inspiring and cool. They want to take photos of their uncles but are too poor to own cameras. Instead, they use their memories to recount the scene. In the second stanza, Harriell plays on the idea that his uncles are otherworldly by comparing them to aliens. But as men, they look normal with regular-size heads and eyes and lack of claws. However, when they pull up in their 1950s automobiles, the boys think that they look space-age. Harriell and his cousins cannot believe that these cars are real. They check out the interior of the cars and are impressed by the radios and the disco balls hanging from the rearview mirrors.
Summary
None had large headsor oval shaped eyes. They weren’t eight feet tallwith iron claws, hanging dreads. But they were out of this world. When they landed their Chevyswe’d rub our eyesmaking sure it was bona fide, that these flying saucershad discos inside.
We waited behind bushes, sniper like discipline, for our uncles to arrive. The four of us, recounting the last time we’d spotted them, the brilliance in what we saw, how we squinted and pointed, dug in penniless pockets for cameras we didn’t own.
THANKS!
