The passive voice!

start

Definition

We use the passive tense to express something from the point of view of the object.

Another aspect of the passive is that, sometimes, we might encounter two objects. This means that we will be able to use two sentences in a passive form.

In other words, the subject of the sentence RECEIVES the effect of the verb rather than performing the action.

And to make it a little bit more difficult, sometimes we can create TWO passive sentences without there being two objects, in these cases, we must start our sentence with “It is believed that…”, “It is thought that…” or “It is said that…”, etc.

It can be used in any verbal tense but it will not always be correct to use passive.

What is it?

Learn what it is before you start using it

It is a grammatical content (not a tense!) that we use to:

To create a passive voice, we must always:

Use the verb BE (conjugated)

Emphasize the object more than the subject that performed the action;

and a PARTICIPLE

talk impersonally;

Use the preposition " by " to express the person that does the action. This is ocasionally optional.

Someone stole my car last week.

PASSIVE

STEP BY STEP!

SOMEONE STOLE MY CAR LAST WEEK

To properly create a passive sentence, we need to follow these steps: Use the object of the active sentence as the subject of the passive sentence. In the example above: My car;

Analyze the verbal tense of the verb in the active sentence and use the verb “be” in the same verbal tense and make sure the subject and the verb “be” in the correct verbal tense agree: stole = past simple; the past simple of be = was/were → (my car) was;

Use the participle of the verb in the active sentence: stolen;

Use the rest of the sentence to complete it: last week;

go!

This step is OPTIONAL. You can decide on using the agent, which means that you will need to use the preposition by + the correct type of noun (me/him/her/us/you/them/the thief/someone/…): by someone.

Definition v2.0

Examples of two objects

OBJECTS = 2

As stated before, sometimes some sentences will have two objects instead of one. In these cases, we can choose which object we want to use as a subject: "Adam gave Susan an apple"

An apple was given to Susan by Adam

Susan was given an apple by Adam

It is said that...

RUMOURS!

If we ever wanted to omit a subject but rather, an idea that you heard , you can begin your sentence with this passive voice phrase: It is said that... It has been said that... It was said that...

It is said that Fabio will win the next Masterchef contest.

Fabio will win the next Masterchef contest.

The next Masterchef contest will be won by Fabio.

THE CAUSATIVE FORM!

Not me!

A Test OF YOUR REFLEXES

The causative is a form of the passive voice that expresses something another person did FOR or TO us when we do not have the ability or time for it.

Its structure is as follows: SBJ + HAVE* + (something) + PART.

*any form!

If you didn't DO the action ( = cut), do not say that. Say...

I had my hair cut.

I cut my hair.

good job!!!

AND THIS IS (MOSTLY) EVERYTHING YOU NEEDED TO KNOW FOR THE PASSIVE VOICE!
CONGRATULATIONS!
