RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Function: to exchange oxygen between blood and air and eliminate carbon dioxide
CONDUCTING PART series of ducts that carry air in and out of the gas exchange part
GAS EXCHANGE PART Tiny sacs that exchange gases with blood
THE NOSE
Composed of bone and cartilage Houses the nostrils Choanae lined with mucus to humedify the air, trap microbes and particles Choanae has cilia to expel particles Many capillaries warm the air
MOUTH AND PHARYNX
Cavity that includes mucous membranes and saliva Tonsils: help filter out germs Uvula: controls the passage of external agents into the system
LARYNX
organ where the voice is produced connects the pharynx to the trachea comprises 9 cartilages
thyroid cartilage the epiglottis cricoid cartilage
TRACHEA
Flexible tube 18 to 20 cm surrounded by rings of cartilage lined with mucus and cilia cough center located
BRONCHI AND BRONCHIOLES

BRONCHIAL TREE

Trachea divides in bronchi Bronchi branches in bronchioles Bronchioles subdivide in alveoli
GAS EXCHANGE
Respiratory- Circulatory gas exchangeBlood picks up oxygen from the air Haemoglobin carries up to 4 oxygen molecules Picks up carbon dioxide to the lungs
LUNGS
Soft expandable organs can store one and a half litres of air Covered by the pleural membane Divided by lungs Right lung three lobes (upper, middle, lower) Left lung two lobes (upper, lower)
INTERCOSTAL MUSCLES
Located between the ribs during breathing contract and pull the rib cage upwards
DIAPHRAGM
Primary muscle for respiration Dome-shaped muscle decreases volume of chest in inhalation increases volume of chest in exhalation
