Il suo spirito inquieto, ansioso, desideroso di affermazione, fu tra i primi a cogliere il sinistro baluginio del razionalismo illuminista e ad anticipare tendenze dello spirito romantico, come il titanismo. Egli era sempre in continua ricerca di libertà, in fuga dalla noia e dall'insoddisfazione, alla conquista del senso esistenziale più profondo; si sentiva diverso dagli altri e si poneva in oppisizione al pensiero comune.

Quando incontrò casualmente la letteratura, fu folgorato e spinto a un lavoro ossessivo, forse perchè solo la letteratura rappresentava la libertà umana. Nacque, così, un pensiero romantico e assoluto.

Da ragazzo studiò nella Reale Accademia di Torino (1758-1766) compiendo numerosi viaggi lungo l'Europa: grand tour.

Viaggiava in modo febbrile, incapace di arrestarsi in alcun luogo, nesuno di essi aveva per lui il materno abbraccio della patria. Tornato a Torino, dopo un amore sfortunato, cominciò quasi inconsapevolmente la sua vera formazione letteraria. Dalla lettura delle Vite parallele di Plutarco partì l'aspirazione alla grandezza assoluta del suo ego. Cominciò a interessarsi alla scrittura. fino a convertirsi ufficialmente, nel 1775, alla letteratura.

RAPPORTI CON L'ILLUMINISMO

Per Alfieri la libertà è l'esigenza principale di ogni uomo dal "forte sentire" e rappresenta la chiave della sua esistenza; tuttavia essere liberi in un mondo governato dall'assolutismo conduce a un conflitto tragico con il potere. I suoi trattati politico-letterari nascono dallo sdegno e dal rifiuto del servilismo della nobiltà verso il potere monarchico, ritenuto primo fattore della sua decadenza.

IDEE POLITICHE E CONCETTO DI LIBERTà

Anche nell'avversione contro la tirannide e i culto della libertà lo scrittore si stacca nettamente dalla cultura dei "lumi", collocandosi su posizioni del tutto peculiari e personali. L'esasperato individualismo e egocentrismo, che sono propri del carattere di Alfieri, lo inducono a scontrarsi con la situazione storica e politica in cui si vive. Il suo rifiuto parte proprio dall'ambiente in cui è nato: il Piemonte sabaudo, caratterizzato da un assolutismo che esercita un rigido controllo su tutte le forme di vita associata da un'aristocrazia sottomessa da una situazione economica e culturale arretrata.Alfieri si trova in urto sia con ciò che esiste, l'assolutismo, sia con ciò che è destinato a sostituirlo, l'assetto borghese, da cui parte un senso di solitudine che è rovesciato in segno di una condizione di spirituale superiorità. Così spiega l'odio della tirannide proprio come rifiuto del potere in sè.

TITANISMO

Si tratta di un atteggiamento tipico del romanticismo. Il termine deriva dalla mitologia greca con riferimento ai ribelli del mito, come i titani, dei giganti. Per titanismo, quindi, si intende un atteggiamento di sfida ad ogni forma di autorità e di potere, nato da uno smisurato orgoglio, ma che osa ospitare la potenza oppressiva anche se sa di essere votata alla sconfitta. Questo ele,mento lo troviamo anche nella "Gerusalemme liberata" di Tasso e nel "Paradiso perduto" di Milton.

"Volli, e volli sempre, e fortissimamente volli"

Scelse la tragedia come suo spazio creativo, che dovette sembrargli come una landa desolata, visto che nella tradizione letteraria ancora nessuno si era mai imposto in quel genere. Dovette, però, leggere tantissimo, studiare e lavorare sul linguaggio per "sfrancenizzarsi e spiemontenizzarsi", conquistando il corretto utilizzo dell'italiano letterario(il toscano). Per questo soggiornò a Pisa, Siena e Firenze e intanto pubblicava una dopo l'altra le sue tragedie nelle quali traspariva già uno stile personalissimo e un linguaggio di grande efficacia.

Questa citazione è presente nella lettera a Ranieri de' Casalbigi dove Alfieri racconta il suo impegno per diventare un autore di tragedie, impegno premiato del grande successo che ebbe la sua prima tragedia: Antonio e Cleopatra.
