ECOSYSTEM AND BIODIVERSITY

START

Created by: Jesus Sosa Delgado

Hi, guys!

We are going to make an escape room from the ecosystem topic. You will have to do missions on this. If you complete all the missions, you will be an expert on ecosystems.

Finally, you have to rescue a wild animal that is in danger due to the human impact on biodiversity. To help the animal escaping from the human impact, you need to get a password. You have 80 minutes to complete all the missions and escape along with wild animal. So ....... GOOD LUCK!!!

What is meant by the term ecosystem?

The community of organisms and the conditions under which they live

All the population of organims of different species living in a habitat

A single organim of any species in its population

10

What is meant by the term community?

A group of similar organisms that can reproduce with each other to produce fertile offspring

A specified area of the ecosystem involved (where the organisms live)

All the populations of organisms of different species living in a specified habitat

10

What of the following pictures represent a population?

10

Which of the following pictures represent biotic factors?

10

Which of the following factor are not abiotic?

POLLUTION

COMPETITION

10

What will happen to the number of cheetahs if the number of zebras decrease?

It will increase

It will stay the same

It will decrease

10

Look at the graph. Why do the numbers of cheetahs follow the same pattern as the number of zebras?

Because cheetahs compete with zebras.

Because cheetahs eat zebras.

Because there was a disease which affects both species of animals.

10

Look at the graph below and answer the question.Which is the line for the tiger population and why?

Tiger population is A, because prey numbers increase causes an increase in predator number

Tiger population is B, because predator numbers increase causes an increase in prey number

Tiger population is B, because prey numbers increase causes an increase in predator number

10

How many secondary consumers are shown in this food web?

Facts About Dinosaurs

  1. Dinosaurs were around in the Mesozoic Era or “The Age of Dinosaurs”.
  2. The Longest dinosaur was over 40 Metres long.
  3. Some dinosaurs swallowed rocks to help grind up their food.
  4. Most dinosaurs weren’t as big as you expect. Dinosaurs were usually closer to human-sized or even smaller. Most scientists believe that the larger bones were just a lot easier to be fossilized.
  5. So far, 108 species of dinosaurs have been discovered in Britain.
  6. When an asteroid hit they became extinct.

Which picture represent a mutualism interdependence?

Slug pellets are put on the soil around the lettuce plants in garden A and garden B. Slug pellets kill slugs. A scientist predicts that the number of caterpillars will decrease in garden A. Choose the right statement

Scientist´s prediction is wrong, as the blackbirds will be eating more lettuces

Scientist´s prediction is correct, as the blackbirds will be eating more caterpillars

Scientist´s prediction is wrong, as the caterpillars have more lettuces, as lettuce are eating only by them

Look at the food web. What might happen if all the rabbits died?

There would be less grass because it would be eaten by the grasshoppers.

There would be more snakes because they would not be in competition with the rabbits

There would be fewer lizards because the hawks would eat more of them

There would be more hawks because there are less rabbits in competition with them.

A species of toad that like to eat butterflies and dragonflies was introduced into this community. Which effect would have the introduction of this road on the food web? Choose the wrong statement.

Frogs would decrease as would have less to eat

Berries might increase as fewer butterflies to eat them

Greenflies and grasshoppers might increase as more berries to eat as fewer butterflies eating them

Mouse might increase as would have more plantain to eat

Ladybird population might increase as fewer being eaten as there are fewer dragonflies

Fun Bee and Honey Facts

  1. A honey bee can fly up to 15 miles per hour.
  2. A honey bee worker only makes an average of 1/12 of a teaspoon in her lifetime.
  3. A honey bee visits 50-100 flowers in one trip.
  4. Honey bees never sleep.
  5. The honey bee is the only insect that produces food for humans.
  6. Eating honey is a natural way to get an energy boost. It is a mixture of simple sugars glucose and fructose. Studies have shown that this works best in preventing fatigueand enhancing athletes performance.
  7. Honey is an antimicrobial agent and can be used effectively on minor burns or scrapes. It has been shown to speed the healing of wounds.

Info

An indigenous species is one that occurs naturally in a given habitat area.

FALSE

TRUE

10

Introducing a non-indigenous species can cause problems for indigenous species e.g. they may compete with each other for the same food, shelter or water resources.

TRUE

FALSE

10

Non-indigenous species can bring NEW DISEASES to a habitat leading to less biodiversity, because these can infect and kill indigenous species which will not have time e.g. via mutations, to have any protection against the 'invading pathogen'.

TRUE

FALSE

10

Which of the follow statments would have a negative impact in the biodiversity by the fish farming?

Excess food and waste leaking into open ocean and cause eutrophication

Increase in parasites which can infect wild animals

Fish farmer are often fed on wild fish, reducing their populations.

Predators can get trapped in the net and die

The farmed fish can escape into the wild and cause issues with the indigenous species

All the above are having a negative impact in the biodiversity

10

In 2000, a council planted indigenous trees as part of a reforestation programme. Why were indigenous trees used instead of non-indigenous trees?

Indigenous trees are less likely to survive

indigenous trees will support more native wildlife

indigenous trees will cause more damage to the soil

indigenous trees will bring in more pests

10

There are three mainly reasons to maintain the biodiversity:Which one of the following reasons is not to maintain the biodiversity?

ECOLOGICAL

AESTHETIC

ECONOMIC

MONOCULTURE

10

Watch the video as many time as you need it and answer the question below. What is the original cause of eutrophication?

Excess of rainfall

10

Watch the video as many time as you need it and answer the question below. What are the dangers of excessive growth of algae and plants

Other organisms eat them and they are toxic

Decrease the water temperature

Increase the water turbidity

They block sunlight for other organisms

10

Watch the video as many time as you need it and answer the question below. Once the algae/green plants die, they are food for...

Anaerobic bacteria

Aerobic bacteria

Fish

Cyanobacteria

10

Watch the video as many time as you need it and answer the question below.

Place the followng in the correct order: 1. Bacteria begin to decompose the dead matter, using up oxygen for respiration. 2. The fertilizer rich in nitrate and phosphate sparks the overgrowth of algae in water bodies. 3. The decomposition causes the water to become depleted of oxygen. 4. All the aquatic organisms die. 5. Algae form, it blocks sunlight from entering in the deep water. 6.Excess nutrients run off from the field into the water.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT LIONS:

  1. Most male lions grow impressive manes the older they get. These manes grow up to 16cm long and are a sign of dominance.
  2. A pride of lions is usually made up of related females and their cubs, plus a male or small group of males who defend their pride.
  3. Lions are highly adaptable and can live in very dry areas like the Kalahari Desert. Here they get most of their water from their prey and will even drink from plants such as the Tsamma melon.
  4. Lions can eat up to 40kg of meat in a single meal - around a quarter of their body weight.
  5. Lions do most of their hunting at night. Interestingly though, lions also hunt during storms. The noise, rain and/or wind make it harder for prey to see and hear them, increasing their chances of a successful hunt.
  6. A group of lions, also called 'a pride', often roar together to mark their territory - a roar can be heard from 5 miles away.

DON´T FORGET TO WRITE DOWN MY DETAILS IN YOUR ESCAPE ROOM SHEET AND HAND IT IN TO YOUR TEACHER
Although my name is Guajira, I belong to Kingdom Animalia and class Mammalia. My scientific name is Acinonyx jubatus, but everyone knows us as cheetah. I am a Felidae, colloquially referred to as cats by humans. My relative and I live mainly in grassland savanna, in a broad section of Africa. We eat around 6.2 kg of meat per day and rarely drink water. Our favourite dish is impala´s meat. Our gestation period is 93 days and litters range in size from one or two up to six cubs. We are threatened by habitat loss, conflict with humans and poaching.
