Germanwings tragedy
On March 24, 2015, the worst tragedy in the history of the Lufthansa Group occurs. A Germanwings Airbus A320 with the flight number 4U9525 crashes on a flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf north-east of Marseille in the French Alps. All 144 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash. In its final report, the French accident investigation authority BEA concludes that the co-pilot deliberately caused the plane to crash.Delvag and Albatros made an important contribution to the insurance side of the tragedy.

The path to becoming a composite insurer
The first EC Directive on the taking-up and pursuit of the business of direct insurance of July 24, 1973 stipulated that transport insurers should in future be subject to full insurance supervision without exception. Delvag was faced with the alternative of ceasing its insurance activities or becoming subject to supervision. The company decided to apply for approval as a composite insurer and received approval on November 30, 1975.

Foundation of "Aero Lloyd AG
On August 12, 1924, Otto Julius Merkel, Karl Grulich, Wilhelm Gessner and Georg von Winterfeld sign the foundation protocol. On September 30, 1924, Aero Lloyd Aktien-Gesellschaft is officially registered by the Berlin-Charlottenburg district court.

Start of AI use in claims management
Delvag relies on the use of AI to classify all claims documents. Our customers' processes and claims are very individual. The AI is used to sort incoming mail according to document type, e.g. new damage report, aircraft hull invoice, etc., and to assign them to new or old claims.

Corona-Pandemic
After the pandemic-related lockdown in 2020, many travelers were afraid to travel abroad. Booking numbers fell drastically worldwide. In order to regain the trust of passengers, the "Bring Me Home" promise was developed and successfully marketed within two weeks in collaboration with Lufthansa.

Relocation to the new headquarters "One Cologne" (Venloer Straße, Cologne)
One Cologne was extensively refurbished before Delvag, Albatros and other tenants moved in. Various sustainability criteria were taken into account, such as
- a head office that is easily accessible by public transport
- a LEED-certified building that takes into account criteria such as reduced light pollution and optimised energy performance
Terror attack 9/11
Drastic tightening of security in air traffic. Delvag and its subsidiaries successfully pass a major test.
Following the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers in New York City on September 11, 2001, aircraft have to remain on the ground due to a lack of available insurance cover. A state guarantee replaces the insurance cover.

Foundation of the second subsidiary "Delvag Rückversicherungs-AG"
"Delvag Rückversicherungs-Aktiengesellschaft" is founded on June 18, 1985 and from then on largely takes over the reinsurance business.

Foundation of the "new" Lufthansa as "Deutsche Lufthansa AG"
Dr. Herbert Culmann started on March 1, 1953 as Head of the Legal Department at "Aktiengesellschaft für Luftverkehrsbedarf" (Luftag), which was renamed Deutsche Lufthansa AG on August 6, 1954. The photo shows Dr. Culmann at the company's Annual General Meeting in Cologne on August 6, 1954.

Launch of the "Lufthansa Aviation Insurance Group" (LAIG) as a purchasing group
The Lufthansa Aviation Insurance Group consists of numerous international airlines and is one of the largest insurance purchasing groups in the aviation market. Delvag underwrites a significant share of the policy.
