Symbol

Symbols add meaning to the text. Like motif, they help point the way to deeper meanings in a text. They are also a quick way for an auhtor to convey meaning. Roses, for example, are a sign of love.

Motif and theme

A motif is a repeated image or idea throughout a text. It often points the way to the theme, like lights on a runway. A theme is the main point or meaning of a story or text. It ususally should be presented as more than a single word. Instead of "growing up" you might say "growing up is painful."
