History

The Royal Palace of Brussels was commissioned by King Leopold II of Belgium (1835-1909). On February 3, 1731, after a tiring day, Maria Elisabeth of Habsburg, the Governor of the Austrian Netherlands and sister of Emperor Charles VI of Habsburg, retired to her apartments in the palace in Brussels. Extremely tired, she was unable to put on the candles, so the fire quickly passed through wooden panels into nearby rooms. The palace was rebuilt in 1770. After renovations during the reign of Leopold II of Belgium, the Royal Palace continues to serve as the residence for the Belgian royal family.

History

It took about 300 years to complete itr. It was finished just before the reign of the emperor Charles V, in 1519.The cathedral underwent several renovations and expansions over the centuries, reflectingvarious architectural styles. The church was elevated to cathedral status in 1962 andhas since been the co-cathedral of the Archdiocese ofMechelen-Brussels.On the outside, the cathedral is built entirely in stone and itsimposing Gothic style towers are 64 metres tall. The choir has been built in the same Gothic style and holds the mausoleums of the Dukes of Brabant and Archduke Ernest of Austria.

The construction of the cathedral began in the early 11th century, around 1047, replacing an earlier chapel, under the patronage of Lambert II, Count of Leuven. Originally it was dedicated to St. Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, and later became associated also with St. Gudula, the patroness of the city. The building of the Cathedral started at the beginning of the 13th century at the request of Henry I, Duke of Brabant. This period coincides with the appearance of the Gothic style in the region.
