FIGHT FOR RIGHTS

There are many women who have played an important role in the fight for gender equality. Michelle Obama, through initiatives such as "Let Girls Learn", actively supported the fight for women's rights, promoting gender equality and worked to ensure girls have access to education and equal opportunities.

MICHELLE OBAMA

During her mandate as first lady, she launched the "Let Girls Learn" initiative, a battle for the education of girls around the world (for example: Albania, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Moldova, Thailand and Qatar) and to promote equality of opportunity in education.

‘Don't be afraid to say what others don't have the courage to say.’

MICHELLE OBAMA

The objectives are: • eliminate all forms of discrimination and violence against women; • ensure equal participation, education and leadership opportunities for women; • guarantee universal access to health services. The goal is fundamental to promote a more just and equitable society, recognizing the decisive role of women in achieving sustainable development.

Gender disparities constitute one of the major obstacles to sustainable development, economic growth and the fight against poverty.

MDG 3 (3rd Millennium Development Goal), to promote gender equality and women's empowerment, has allowed important progress to be made in the schooling of girls and in the inclusion of women in the job market. Objective 5 aims to achieve equal opportunities between women and men in economic development; the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls (such as the abolition of forced and early marriages) and equal rights at all levels of partecipation.

Michelle Obama was also the promoter of the “State of Women”, aimed at defending women's rights and addressing issues, such as gender violence and inequality in the world of work.
