1. Real Men

Mitski comments on the typical gendered view of masculinity. The way “real men” are expected to act is often problematic, especially to themselves, as it culminates in self-destructive behaviors.

Internalized misogyny and social conformity cause some women to believe that they’re only good enough if they’re validated by a man.

As the sun, the boy never has to worry about trouble (the night) and enjoys nothing but bliss (the song from the morning birds). Mitski shows a sense of inferiority and contrast by claiming she is part of the night but she doesn’t think of herself as the moon or the stars.

The contrast between the sun and night also represents the two different cultures Mitski and her love interest grew up in. Like the day and night, they are fundamentally different and therefore it is nearly impossible for them to come together.
