Intensifiers

Intensifiers are words or phrases that strengthen the meaning of an adjective or adverb. They make the description more powerful or extreme.

Examples of Intensifiers: Very, extremely, really, absolutely, incredibly, quite, so, too, immensely, exceptionally, totally, utterly, especially, astonishingly, remarkably.

  • This book is much more interesting than the one I read last week.
  • The new smartphone is far more advanced than the previous model.
  • The weather in summer is significantly hotter than in winter.

Mitigators

They are words or phrases that soften the impact of a statement, making it less absolute or intense.

Somewhat, a bit, a little, kind of, sort of, partly, relatively, fairly, slightly, mildly, rather, to some extent.
  • This book is much more interesting than the one I read last week.
  • The new smartphone is far more advanced than the previous model.
  • The weather in summer is significantly hotter than in winter.
