ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

ADJECTIVES

• are placed before nouns.
• have the same form in the singular and in the plural.
• appear after verbs which do not express actions (feel, look, smell, taste, be, become,...)
• adjectives which start with a- (alive or afraid) only appear after these verbs.
• we can use some adjectives, like young, rich, old or unemployed, with the article the to designate groups of people.

• nouns, when followed by other nouns
• cardinal numbers
• present and past participles

adverbs

describe verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, whole sentences or past participles. 1. Manner: in any position or at the beginning for emphasis. Before passive verbs and after active verbs (seriously) *manner + place + time * with verbs of movement: place+ manner + time 2. Place: usually at the end of the sentence (there) 3. Time: at the end of the sentence or at the beginning for emphasis. If they have one syllable, within the sentence (now) 4. Frequency: before the main verb or after to be (usually) 5. Degree: before the word they modify (quite/rather/ fairly/ pretty + adjective + noun) 6. Sentence adverbs: at the beginning, before the main verb or at the end (probably)

SPECIAL CASES

*There are some adjectives which end in -ly, like friendly, so when we use them as adverbs we need to add some expressions such as in a ----way/ manner.

There are other words ending in -ly which are both adjectives and adverbs, like weekly or monthly.

Adverbs with two forms and differences in meaning

• deep: a long way and deeply: very much
• direct: without stopping and directly: immediately
• free: without payment and freely: with freedom
• hard: with a lot of effort and hardly: scarcely
• high: a long way up and highly: very, greatly.
• last: after all the others and lastly: finally
• late: after the usual expected time and lately: recently
• near: close and nearly: almost
• pretty: fairly and prettily: in a nice way
• short: suddenly and shortly: in a while
• sure: certainly and surely: undoubtedly
• wide: completely and widely: in a lot of places
• wrong: not correctly and wrongly: unjustly
