The region of northern Europe includes the British Isles and the Scandinavian Peninsula.
Northern Europe is a region located on Europe's northern peninsulas and islands. Within this region are the countries of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland.
Geographic Features
Northern Europe is located far north. Temperatures can be very cold across the region, especially in mountainous areas of the Nordic countries. Cold temperatures can also freeze over bodies of water, including parts of the Baltic and Norwegian seas. However, the rest of the region has temperate climates. Outside of mountainous areas are plains and lowlands where most people in the region live.
Northern Europe is bordered by Russia.
Is Russia part of Europe or Asia?
Adapting to your environment
Physical Features and Human Features

Circle ways in which people in the nordic countries adapt to their environment.
Natural Resources Northern Europe is home to many different natural resources, which benefits the countries there. The environment gives each country different natural resources, depending on what the country has access to
Northern Europe Northern Europe is a temperate and polar region. Its climates and environment offer many opportunities for the people who live there. Today, some of region's challenges stem from the historical overuse of its resources. Others come from disagreements between countries about how resources should be used today.
Match the countries of northern Europe to the information about their natural resources.

The United Kingdom and Ireland are located on the British Isles. Isle is another name for a small island or peninsula. The British Isles consist of the island of Great Britain, the island of Ireland, and other smaller islands. The British Isles have a temperate climate, with warm summers and cold winters. They are also known for having frequent rain.
Glaciers and Fjords
Several coastlines of northern Europe are characterized by long, narrow saltwater inlets called fjords. These fjords were created by the slow movement of glaciers long ago. Much of the coastline of Norway is made up of fjords. There are also fjords in northern Great Britain and Iceland. These areas are often difficult to navigate by ship.
The beautiful fjords of Norway are among the country's major tourist attractions.
Fishing is important to the economies of many northern Europe countries. However, overfishing is a problem. Most countries limit fishing to protect the supply, and some are pursuing fish farming to meet people's demand for fish. Sometimes fishing is a source of conflict in the region. Finland allows the fishing industry to harvest certain types of whales, which has angered many people around the world. Meanwhile, Iceland's fishing boats travel widely, sometimes into territory other countries claim for themselves.
Finland has some of the largest forests in Europe. Two of the country's major exports are wood and paper. Elsewhere in the region, people make a business of planting and managing forests. In some countries, the government owns, plants, and manages many forests. In others, small farmers plant and raise trees alongside other farm products. Many northern European countries import wood and paper.
The plains of northern Europe are ideal for farming. About half of Denmark's land is farmland, and farming is central to the economy. Ireland and the United Kingdom also have plenty of fertile land. The rest of the countries have much smaller areas for farming, although some are quite productive. Iceland has very little farmland, which is mostly used for livestock. In the south, greenhouses produce fresh fruits and vegetables. The country imports much of its food.
Although Iceland is considered a Nordic country, it is not located in Europe. Instead, Iceland is located on an island in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has many mountains and glaciers, and most of the island has a polar climate. Ocean currents keep its lowland climates temperate, however. The country also has many geysers and hot springs.
Hills and Mountains The northern and western areas of the island of Great Britain are hilly and mountainous. They are also sometimes difficult for people to live in. For example, the Scottish Highlands in northern Scotland have a very small population compared to the rest of the country. The Scandinavian Peninsula is also very mountainous. The Kjolen Mountains form much of the border between Norway and Sweden. The mountainous areas on this peninsula can be especially cold and are home to few people.
The Kjolen Mountains lie on the border between Norway and Sweden.
Bodies of Water All the countries of northern Europe have long coastlines. Several major bodies of water in the region form boundaries and provide shipping routes. The English Channel is a thin body of water separating the British Isles from mainland Europe. The Norwegian Sea lies between Iceland and Norway. The North Sea separates the British Isles, the Scandinavian Peninsula, and the Jutland Peninsula. Finally, the Baltic Sea is a protected inland sea that separates the Scandinavian Peninsula and Finland from mainland Europe.

The Nordic countries include Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. Norway and Sweden are located on the Scandinavian Peninsula. Finland is farther east. Denmark is located south of the Scandinavian Peninsula. It occupies the Jutland Peninsula and a group of islands called the Danish archipelago. Scandinavia's climate is mostly temperate, but some areas experience colder temperatures. Some northern parts of the region have polar climates. Rain and snowfall are common.

Plains Northern Europe has several major plains areas, many of which are centers of farming for the region. These areas have good soil and receive decent amounts of rain. Fertile plains are found in southern Great Britain, central Ireland, the west coast of Norway, the southwestern tip of Sweden, and the northern and eastern regions of Denmark.
Northern Europe is highly developed. This potato farm in Denmark is an example of the modern farms in the region.
