REDUCE INEQUALITY WITHIN AND AMONG COUNTRIES

SOME BACKGROUND

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were developed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2012. The purpose was to create a set of global goals, related with the environmental, political and economic challenges that we face as humanity. In this way, in 2015 the UN chose through a vote 17 objectives applicable universally to transform the world and has promoted them as global goals of sustainable development for the period 2015-2030, thus replacing the 8 Millennium Development Goals.

WHAT ARE THE SDG

The SDGs are a commitment that seeks to address the most urgent problems of the world and they are all interrelated. They are a universal call to action to respond sustainably against the threat of climate change, having a positive impact in the way we manage our fragile natural resources, promoting peace and inclusive societies, to reduce inequalities and contribute to the prosperity of economies. Since the beginning of the SDGs, they have aimed at the so-called 2030 Agenda, which has provided a model for shared prosperity in a sustainable world, in which all people can lead productive lives, living peacefully and on a healthy planet.

Focus On Goal 10

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals. These goals have the power to create a better world by 2030, by ending poverty, fighting inequality and addressing the urgency of climate change.Too much of the world’s wealth is held by a very small group of people. This often leads to financial and social discrimination. In order for nations to flourish, equality and prosperity must be available to everyone – regardless of gender, race, religious beliefs or economic status. When every individual is self sufficient, the entire world prospers.

Objective 10 aims to adapt policies and legislative instruments to reduce, in each country, disparities based on income, or sex, age, disability, race, class, ethnicity, gender, , economic or other status. It aims to improve the regulation and monitoring of financial markets and institutions and also addresses inequalities between countries by encouraging development assistance and direct investment to the neediest nations, promoting special and different trade treatment and encouraging greater representation of developing countries in the decision-making process of global economic and financial institutions. Despite the significant progress achieved by the international community and the most vulnerable nations, situations of strong inequality persist and large disparities in access to health, education and other services and marked income disparities threaten social cohesion and constrain economic growth and progress in poverty reduction.
